The DTS-B5 is the tenth-anniversary edition of the Toro-yuki series, a line of home-use kakigori machines that has sold over a million units in Japan across its run. The DTS-B5 is not a marginal upgrade. It addresses the two complaints that came up consistently with earlier models: ice cube incompatibility and blade texture control.
What changed from previous Toro-yuki models
Ice cube support
Earlier Toro-yuki machines required block ice frozen in dedicated molds. The DTS-B5 accepts standard ice cubes from a household freezer tray directly, with no adapter or special preparation. For home users who do not want to plan 3-5 days ahead for block ice freezing, this is the meaningful change. Block ice still produces finer, more consistent shavings, but now the machine works either way.
Blade control dial
A dedicated dial lets you adjust blade height before shaving. Fine settings produce the ultra-thin, snow-like shavings that absorb syrup throughout. Coarser settings give a heavier, crunchier result that some users prefer with denser toppings like anko or ice cream. Having the adjustment on a dial rather than a fixed blade position makes it practical to change between bowls.
Design and size
The DTS-B5 is compact enough to leave on a kitchen counter without dominating it. Available in black or blue. The cleaning process is straightforward: the machine disassembles for hand-washing, and the included brush handles the blade area safely. These are not exciting features, but they matter for a machine that gets used regularly.
